The Everglades is a vast and consists of a variety of ecosystems. One is the largest mangrove forest in North America. The forest is extensively flooded so the only way to practically access this system is via paddle craft.
This is area where the Everglades transitions from fresh to salt water. Throughout the forest are brackish "lakes". This mix of "sweet" fresh water and salt water is part of what makes the Everglades so special and such a wonderful place to experience. These lakes, surrounded by mangroves, are refuges and nursery grounds for herons, egrets, stilts, ducks, wood storks, spoonbills, alligators, otters and a gamut of fishes. You will not see dolphins and manatees on this experience; however, you will likely encounter the American Alligator.
Interconnecting these lakes are narrow, flowing tidal creeks. Forming a mangrove tunnel, the forest grows to the very edge and even over the tops of these. The sunlight (or moonlight) shimmering through the canopy, the stillness of the forest vegetation and the sounds of the forest itself, make for a surreal and mystical experience in the tunnels. The dense mangrove canopy regulates moisture and humidity and create micro-climates that allow epiphytic orchids, mosses and bromeliads to thrive.
